<p class="wp-block-paragraph">NVIDIA’s reported $12.9 billion acquisition of Hugging Face has raised a question within the open-source AI community: <strong>what happens when the company behind one of the world’s largest open-source AI hubs is also the dominant GPU manufacturer?</strong></p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The deal has not changed how Hugging Face works today, and its software still supports hardware beyond NVIDIA. But it does introduce a new question around neutrality.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hugging Face has historically served as common infrastructure for models from companies including Meta and Alibaba, regardless of where developers ultimately run them.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">That makes alternatives worth considering right now, especially since the acquisition may come with some fine print.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">One alternative is <strong>Hippius Hub</strong>, a model and container registry built around the idea that the registry should have no stake in the hardware underneath the workload.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="907" src="https://taodaily.io/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-191-1024x907.png" alt="" class="wp-image-24273" srcset="https://taodaily.io/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-191-1024x907.png 1024w, https://taodaily.io/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-191-300x266.png 300w, https://taodaily.io/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-191-767x679.png 767w, https://taodaily.io/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-191.png 1299w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Hippius Hub <a href="https://hippius.com/hippius-hub">dashboard</a></figcaption></figure> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hippius Hub is compatible with the existing <code>huggingface_hub</code> workflow, meaning developers can migrate with a relatively small change rather than rebuilding their infrastructure from scratch.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Its registry also supports standard OCI containers, so the same infrastructure can handle both AI models and Docker-compatible images.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The bigger distinction is portability.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hippius does not sell GPUs or operate an inference business, so it has no direct incentive for a model to run specifically on NVIDIA. You can always plug in AMD, CPUs, or other compute environments.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Public models and container images can also be pulled without an account, while the free tier can be used for hosting public models.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This fits into a broader direction Hippius has been taking. As we covered in <em>The TAO Daily</em> earlier, <strong>Hippius (SN75) has <a href="https://taodaily.io/hippius-sn75-outbuilt-its-way-from-storage-into-confidential-computing/">expanded</a> from decentralized storage into confidential computing and the cloud infrastructure stack</strong>.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The NVIDIA-Hugging Face deal may ultimately change very little for developers. But for teams that care about keeping their AI infrastructure portable and hardware-neutral, <strong>Hippius Hub is now an alternative worth knowing about.</strong></p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Read more about the Hippius Hub angle <a href="https://hippius.com/blog/hugging-face-alternatives-switch-to-hippius-hub">here</a>.</p>
