Rencontre avec Mentor : le cofondateur de TPN qui a transformé un VPN en subnet de compression de LLM

TPN (SN65) était censé être une démo technique pour une plateforme de financement. C'est devenu l'un des subnets les plus stratégiques de Bittensor.

Mentor, l'un des quatre cofondateurs de TPN (SN65), revient sur le parcours étonnant de son subnet sur Bittensor. Issus de l'écosystème Ethereum et Polkadot, lui et ses associés — dont son frère Mikel — ont d'abord construit Taofu, une plateforme de tokenisation de parts de subnets. Le VPN décentralisé n'était qu'une démo pour illustrer le produit. La plateforme n'a jamais trouvé son marché, mais le subnet de démonstration a pris une vie propre.

Le pivot vers la compression distribuée de LLM est né d'un constat : on ne peut pas prévoir ce que la compression d'un modèle va dégrader. Sur SN65, les mineurs travaillent précisément à résoudre ce problème d'optimisation. Mentor est convaincu que cette version de TPN est la bonne, et l'enjeu est de taille : rendre la compression de modèles intelligible, mesurable et collaboratif grâce à l'infrastructure de Bittensor.

He and his three co-founders came up through the Ethereum ecosystem, starting young, they were students at the time, and spent their formative years inside what was then the Bitcoin and Ethereum world.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Peep at Mentor&#8217;s LinkedIn <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mentorpalokaj?utm_source=share_via&amp;utm_content=profile&amp;utm_medium=member_android">here</a>.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">That early gave them something a lot of subnet builders don&#8217;t have: a deep, lived familiarity with multiple blockchains. Two of the co-founders, Mentor and <a href="https://x.com/0xDutchmikel">Mikel</a>, are brothers who&#8217;d always intended to work together. The subnet wasn&#8217;t supposed to be a VPN at all.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The team&#8217;s original product was <strong>Taofu</strong>, a fundraising platform that tokenized the owner&#8217;s share of subnets and let those tokenized shares be sold. To demo it, they spun up their own subnet, and because Mentor had a background in VPNs, they made it a VPN subnet. The fundraising platform never found product-market fit.
